Recent advances in AI, sensing and onboard computing are turning local autonomy from a longterm vision into a practical engineering reality, enabling autonomous operation across a much broader range of ff-road machines and operating environments. By moving intelligence onto the vehicle, local autonomy reduces dependence on site infrastructure and high-definition maps, making automation practical for quarries, smaller mines, construction sites, and other dynamic ff-road environments. This presentation explores why the building blocks for local autonomy are now coming together, how the technology works, and how a cross-vertical software approach improves robustness while reducing development and deployment costs. It also discusses the path to scaling local autonomy, highlights the machines and applications best suited for it today, and shares insights from deployments across the civilian and defense sectors.
