Off-Road Autonomy: Expanding where autonomous machines work

20 Aug 2026
Room 13
Architecture, Autonomy and Digitalization
Recent advances in AI, sensor technology, and onboard computing are turning perception-driven autonomy from a long-term vision into a practical reality for off-road applications. For the first time, autonomous machines are becoming both technically and economically viable in dynamic, unstructured off-road environments where dependence on site infrastructure, high-definition maps, or continuous GNSS localization has traditionally constrained deployment. This is unlocking new opportunities for autonomy across quarrying, mining, construction, agriculture, and defense. This presentation explores why perception-driven autonomy has reached an inflection point, explains the principles behind the technology, and shows how a cross vertical software approach improves robustness while reducing development and deployment costs. It also highlights the machine types and use cases where perception-driven autonomy delivers the greatest value, and shares insights from deployments across the civilian and defense sectors.
