Advances in hydraulic cylinder linear position sensing over the years

19 Aug 2026
NFPA - Day1
For many years, off-highway OEMs and equipment operators have desired more control and automation of machine functions. Fluid power component manufacturers have been using hydraulic cylinder position sensing to enable closed-loop control. A few dominant technologies have been accepted for both internal and external cylinder linear position sensing. In this presentation we will discuss the history of optical, magnetostriction and Hall effect sensing, and a new technology known as integrated radar measurement.
  • Why motion control is important for off-highway OEMs and equipment operators
  • How hydraulic cylinder position sensing enables closed-loop control
  • History of internal and external cylinder position-sensing technologies
  • How different technologies work – optical, magnetostriction, Hall effect
  • New technology for cylinder position sensing – integrated radar measurement
